Hands-on art classes offered by the Mingei and JCNI

The Mingei International Museum and the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation are hosting free, hands-on art classes for teens and families!

This six-week long session is the first of a series of art classes for teens and families at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center. Artist and educator Felicia Morgenstern will lead participants as they create art projects inspired by the museum’s collections and exhibitions.

The theme for this session is “Branching Out – Connecting Past, Present & Future”. Participants will create their own Tree of Life/Family Tree and a Día de los Muertos-inspired ancestral offering using their personal and cultural materials and themes. Each group will also complete a joint project together.

This Weekend: Summer Series at Market Creek

The Celebrating Families Summer Series at Market Creek continues this weekend with a family-friendly movie and gospel performances you don’t want to miss!

Friday Family Movie Night – August 13
This week’s movie is Little Giants (1994), a comedy about a pair of brothers who coach rival Pee Wee football teams. Starring Rick Moranis and Ed O’Neill. Rated PG. Pre-movie activities begin at 7:00pm. The movie begins at dusk.

Sunday Gospel Concert – August 15
Island Gospel is the theme for this week’s concert, which features local youth and adult choirs and choral groups. Performances are from 3:00-6:00pm in the amphitheater.

Admission to Summer Series events is FREE! Bring your family and friends for a relaxing evening or afternoon out.

The Market Creek Plaza amphitheater is located at 310 Euclid Avenue, next to Food 4 Less and the Euclid Avenue Trolley Station. For more information about these events, please call 619-527-6161.

Project Compassion

Project Compassion is a community resource supporting families affected by crimes against youth. Trained volunteers connect resources and provide comfort and compassion to victims’ families 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Project Compassion is a collaboration of Project Safe Way, San Diego Commission on Gang Prevention & Intervention, the San Diego District Attorney’s Office, and community organizations, businesses, and faith leaders.
