People’s Produce Certified Farmers Market Grant Re-Opening

Peoples Produce Farmers Market

Buy Local San Diego Produce at the grand re-opening of the People’s Produce Certified farmers Market on Saturday, Oct 25th. The People’s Produce Certified farmers Market will take place every Saturday from 3pm to 6pm. At this market, you can purchase fresh produce or seedlings from local farmers or prepared foods from local vendors with cash, EBT, and WIC vouchers. Often the market will have activities for children and wellness activities for families such as health screenings, cooking demonstrations.

A disproportionate percentage of residents in Southeastern San Diego suffer from chronic, life-threatening diseases that can be traced to diet and nutrition, exacerbated by a severe shortage of places offering fresh, affordable produce. The Project New Village People’s Produce Urban Agriculture Initiative is a grassroots, neighborhood-based initiative which utilizes a social determinant of health model to address inequities and to promote universal access to good food as a viable avenue to better health

The October 25th Grand Re-opening of the People’s Produce Certified farmers Market will feature a special wellness hour, 2:00pm – 3:00pm featuring healthy food sampling, a fitness class, and free give-away of healthy cook books, pedometers and more At 2:30pm Supervisor Greg Cox, City Council member Myrtle Cole and other health and community leaders will address the community.

The October 25th Grand Re-opening of the People’s Produce Certified farmers Market takes place at a new location, Chollas Creek Crossing, at 47th and Castana Street. In partnership with Groundworks San Diego, Project New Village is engaging neighborhood residents to embrace healthy lifestyles, healthy food options and environmental wellness.

The market officially closed the Market Street site on October 4th. The market’s new home – Chollas Creek Crossing –is a three-acre gathering place, adjacent to Chollas Creek with student artwork, a native plant garden, and native trees and shrubs that support creek wildlife. Chollas Creek Crossing will be managed by Groundwork San Diego

Come to the grand re-opening of the People’s Produce Certified farmers Market to support local farmers and small businesses, while having a good time in a new neighborhood gathering space. This market will be a great place to spend some time on a Saturday afternoon

This 65 minute documentary tells the real story of how the health care system in Canada turned out to be so completely different from that in the United States, when in the 1950’s they were essentially the same. While Canadians experience the benefits and peace of mind of Canada’s universal health care system, the forces against change in the U.S. are now much stronger and have much more at stake financially. Is there hope for the United States?

THE NIGGA Project Experience – Film Screening & Workshop

Nigga Project ExperienceThe Nigga Project Experience is a workshop focused around a documentary designed to emotionally connect youth in our communities to the original intent behind the “N” word using elders in the community to speak on how they feel about the term. The goal of the film is to give youth an alternative thought to the word’s use and help them think critically about why they use the word so loosely.

After the documentary is shown, using trauma informed care we initiate activities with the viewers designed to provide healing from the injuries the “N” word and the experiences linked to the word may have caused. We also discuss how the term can be eradicated if at all possible and new words that we can use to identify one another as we progress out of bondage.
