City Council Meeting on Monday January 7

On Monday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. the San Diego City Council will formally declare a vacancy in District 4 and set the election date to select a new Council Representative.

Former City Councilmember Tony Young formally resigned his seat on Jan. 1, setting the stage for a special election on March 26 to replace him as Council Representative for District 4. San Diego’s municipal code dictates that the special election in District 4 must be held using the old district boundaries, not those recently established by City redistricting. If no candidate wins the upcoming special election with more than 50 percent of the vote, a run-off election will then be held between the two top vote-getters within 45 days.

Though the City Council seat will be vacant until the election results are final, current District 4 staff will be supervised by Council President Todd Gloria and remain in place to handle constituent needs.

You’re Invited to The Village Arts & Culture Press Conference

On Tuesday, October 30 at 10:00 am, please join Mayor Jerry Sanders, Council President Tony Young, the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation (JCNI), and residents of southeastern San Diego as they launch a plan to create a cultural arts district in one of San Diego’s most dynamic and diverse neighborhoods.

The plan is the result of nine months of work by hundreds of community members and builds on the history of and commitment to arts and culture that has been the hallmark of southeastern San Diego for decades.

Creation of the plan was funded by a prestigious grant from the National Endowment for the Arts’ first round of the Our Town program, and matched dollar-for-dollar by JCNI and the Jacobs Family Foundation, longtime philanthropic partners in the community.

Art Murals Inspire youth to graduate

San Diego City Council President Tony Young, MTS Chairman Harry Mathis, educator Ray Kinne and a team of art students recently unveiled a larger-than-life mural at the 47th Street Trolley Station in the Chollas View neighborhood of San Diego. It’s all part of a public awareness and education campaign dubbed “You Can Do It!” that encourages local students and adults to graduate from high school, enroll in college and pursue graduate degrees.

At a noon-time celebration on June 28 the City leaders, MTS officials and volunteer artists put the finishing touches on Trolley Station artwork – one of a dozen large-scale photographic installations depicting recent graduates that are now going up on walls of public facilities and private buildings throughout southeastern San Diego, including Encanto Boys & Girls Clubs, Skyline Hills Recreation Center, Paradise Hills Library and Food Land Supermarkets.

“We are hoping to send a big message to local students to stay in school and aspire to graduation degrees,” said Council President Young.

According to MTS Chairman Mathis, “The ‘You Can Do It” mural is another example of how Council President Young has found a way to beautify a Trolley Station and call attention to the importance of education to the community. The mural will be an inspiration for the more than 2,000 people who go to and from the 47th Street Trolley Station each day.”
