Poncho Sanchez Tickets on Sale

For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery blend of straightahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies & rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. His influences are numerous, but among the more prominent figures that inform his music are two of the primary architects of Latin jazz – conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

A native of Laredo, Texas, Sanchez moved to Los Angeles at the age of four, where he was deeply influenced by the music he heard in the Chicano neighborhood in which he lived. Initially a guitarist, he played with a series of junior high school and high school rhythm & blues bands. Sanchez then taught himself how to play the conga by spending hours practicing Caj Tjader, Machito, and Tito Puente records. He was also deeply influenced by the hard bop sounds of the Jazz Crusaders.

After more than two decades in music, Sanchez’s efforts paid off when his album, Latin Soul, received a Grammy award as Best Latin Album of 1999. Throughout the next decade, Sanchez continued to record, releasing such albums as 2000’s Soul of the Conga, 2001’s Latin Spirits, 2003’s Out of Sight!, 2005’s Do It!, 2007’s Raise Your Hand, and 2009’s hard bop-influenced Psychedelic Blues. In 2011, he paid tribute to the innovative Afro-Cuban recordings of Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo by teaming up with trumpeter Terence Blanchard for Chano y Dizzy.

The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, located in southeastern San Diego, continues to move the “Revitalizing Together” initiative forward with the launch of JACOBS PRESENTS, a first-class concert series designed to present artists and programs that appeal to audiences throughout the region. The concert series kicks off on January 22 with award-winning R&B band Mint Condition, who will take the stage in the Jacobs Center’s Celebration Hall. The Hall, completed in 2008, features concert-quality acoustics, lighting, and an intimate 760 seats, producers hope to establish this as San Diego’s newest quality venue for live music.

“Revitalizing a community requires multiple partners and innovative initiatives to succeed. We believe strongly in the power of the arts as a community building vehicle and economic engine,” explained JCNI President and CEO Reginald Jones. “JACOBS PRESENTS is one part of our increased focus on social enterprise. The effort will bring high level performing arts to our events center and stimulate the local economy.”

Area Councilmember Myrtle Cole is enthusiastic about this venture. Cole states, “JACOBS PRESENTS has potential to ignite the local economy by bringing ticket buying concert-goers from around San Diego to our community. This can stimulate support of our local businesses, including eateries in Market Creek Plaza adjacent to the Jacobs Center.” Further, says Cole, “more San Diegans can discover the diversity and cultural richness of the community.”

In addition to Mint Condition, the complete 2014 concert series includes jazz vocalist Michelle Coltrane featuring Shea Welch and Ensemble in an April 25th Benefit Concert. Coltrane is the daughter of the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane. Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band take the stage on June 20th. Te Vaka, the Oceanic music group that performs original contemporary Pacific music or “South Pacific Fusion”, rounds out the currently announced series with a September 2014 date to be announced.

Uptown_Postcard_Page_1post

The entire family will enjoy this 1979 Broadway musical, “Christmas Is Comin’ Uptown,” which is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Gregory Hines played Scrooge in the original Broadway cast. The Scrooge in this adaptation is an inner- city slumlord about to foreclose on an apartment house, a recreation center and a church. He gets the usual visits from his late partner Marley; and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future take him on their rounds. All of those Dickensian characters are dancing, jiving and swinging to a Harlem beat. Celebrate this 50th Anniversary holiday performance with Common Ground Theatre.

“I am very excited to be bringing one of my favorite musicals back to Common Ground Theatre and the ECC stage,” said Charles W. Patmon, Jr., Executive Artistic Director of Common Ground Theatre and the production’s director. “With this updated version of such a holiday classic, I am sure that the San Diego audience will make this a holiday tradition for years to come.”

Each production will be performed at the Educational Cultural Complex – Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $25 General Admission; $20 for Students/Military/Seniors/Groups of 10; and $15.00 for children 12 and under and groups of 20 or more.  For more information and to purchase tickets, please contact the CGT Box Office at 619-272-3209, or go online to commongroundtheatre.org.

The Spay Neuter Action Project (SNAP) to Hold Monthly Clinics at Market Creek Plaza

snap

The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation is pleased to announce its new partnership in the areas of health and safety with the Spay Neuter Action Project (SNAP) of San Diego.  SNAP provides spay and neutering services for cats and dogs aboard their famous “Neuter Scooter” throughout San Diego County.  The two fully equipped surgical suites on wheels just celebrated ten years of service in which 45,000 animals were “fixed” on one Neuter Scooter alone.  Considering that one female cat plus her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in six years, SNAP has spared needless pain and suffering that comes from unwanted litters and reduced the amount of homeless animals entering overcrowded shelters with, at times, harsh conditions.

Now at the cusp of their eleventh year, SNAP continues their dedication to providing much needed services that benefit both pets and their community.  For the spayed or neutered animal, life expectancy is on average three years longer than one who continues to reproduce unchecked.  Spaying and neutering can also prevent cancer and other diseases, depending on the age of the animal.  For the community, public safety improves by reducing the number of strays roaming the streets, incidence of dog bites, and fights with other animals in which people trying to intervene can get hurt.  Either way, it’s a win-win!

In addition to SNAP’s success in reducing pet overpopulation, they have an educational component by way of free classroom workshops for K-12 students.  Each program is tailored to fit the needs of the individual school or classroom and emphasizes responsibility and kindness, reinforcing the belief that children who are kind to animals are kind to each other.  Based on class age, students will learn about proper pet care, dog bite prevention, pet overpopulation, and career options in animal welfare.  At times well-trained animals may be part of the workshop and in some cases the Neuter Scooter may be on the premises for students to tour.

Here are some important details to keep in mind:

  • An appointment is a must—no exceptions
  • Dogs on leashes and cats in carriers
  • Pet drop off between 7:00-8:00 am
  • Pet pick up can vary but usually between 2:00-3:00 pm

The Neuter Scooters will be at the Market Creek Plaza 310 Euclid Ave. San Diego, CA 92114   (running along the trolley line just west of Starbucks) on:

  • Thursday, December 5
  • Friday, December 6
  • Thursday, December 19
  • Friday, December 20

If you’d like to book an appointment with SNAP, please call them at (866)-772-9287 or (619) 525-3047.  A few dedicated staff and volunteers man the SNAP hotline; if your call is not answered please leave a message and SNAP will return your call. When you receive a call back, have your pet’s breed, age, and weight handy.  You may be asked to provide additional details.  While setting the appointment you will be provided with the cost of service, instructions on how to prep your animal for surgery, and other essential information.

Please rest assured that spaying (females) and neutering (males) procedures are performed by licensed and qualified veterinarians with assistance from licensed veterinarian technicians.  Their mission is to provide pets in San Diego with a safe and healthy environment while helping to reduce pet overpopulation.  By spaying or neutering your pet, you are doing a good thing.  Please call today!
